At My Choice Wisconsin, our employees are passionate about the work we do. We come from all walks of life but are united by a dedication to serving our members and helping them find ways to live their healthiest, most independent lives. Read on to learn WHY we come to work every day!
My passion for helping people in my community all began in 2008 while employed as a cashier at Save a Lot grocery store. I loved helping people find what they needed. However, while working there I saw a greater need: someone who could communicate diet education but still connect with the person as an individual.
I transitioned my line of work over the course of 11 years to become a Dietetic Technician Registered (DTR). I graduated from Milwaukee Area Technical college with an Associate of Arts and Sciences degree in dietetic technician and Bachelor of Arts degree in health communications with a minor in food and nutrition from Mount Mary University. In addition to becoming a DTR, I worked and interned for the Milwaukee Health Department’s Women, Infant, and Children’s (W.I.C.) food and nutrition program as a DTR and a medical assistant.
While employed at the W.I.C. office, I worked with a young woman who was pregnant but had lost a baby in the past. She felt like no one listened to her needs until she met me. I recall her first visit where we talked about how much weight she needed to gain, what foods to stay away from during pregnancy (like deli meat), and how she could manage nursing for her infant and herself. I worked closely with her for her entire pregnancy and when she came into my office again, this time with her son, my heart was overjoyed. I knew in my heart that doing this kind of work wasn’t only personally gratifying, but it served a higher purpose.
Then one fateful night, I came across a DTR position at MCW. I thought how awesome it would be to help the elderly and individuals with physical and intellectual disabilities. I jumped at the chance and prayed I would receive the position. To my amazement, I did! While working on one of my oral nutritional supplement screens, I spoke to a member’s daughter who needed someone to listen. She confided in me about the trials she was having to keep her mother’s weight stable and to prevent weight loss. Her and I made a deep connection and to this day she feels that I am someone who listens with empathy. That is when I knew why I chose MCW as the best place to work: I chose MCW because I wanted to make an impactful change and make meaningful connections with people to cultivate positive outcomes.
Since working at MCW, I have grown professionally and personally. I can honestly say this is the most impactful job I’ve ever had. I can bring my full self to work daily while using interpersonal skills to keep members and community advocates engaged. Working at MCW is more than just business, it’s very personal and requires a greater call and purpose for the betterment of all communities.
